Dr. Hugh Simmons Lynn led a fascinating life that took him around the world performing magic in China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand across the United States, throughout Europe, India and South Africa. Born John Wesley Simmons in the small English village of Axbridge, on the 30th of May, 1836, John developed an early interest in magic after seeing an itinerant performer at the local market fair. At the age of 27, Lynn left England bound for Australia to make his fortune as a conjuror. Although he initially billed himself as Professor Washington Blythe he quickly changed his name to Professor Washington Simmons. After six months in Australia, John joined a small troupe of entertainers bound for the Far East. Arriving in China and then on to Japan, John became the earliest western magician to perform in these countries. While in the Far East, John immersed himself in learning the mystic arts of these great cultures. He would later introduce such novelties as the Floating Butterflies and Top Spinning on the tip of a Sword to western audiences.
In 1873, at the height of his fame, Dr. H. S. Lynn published his autobiography The Adventures of the Strange Man. Contained within the pages of this text was a fascinating story chronicling one of the 19th century's most well travelled performers. However, Lynn wrote his biography for purely promotional purposes and thus many of its anecdotes are over inflated or simply pure fiction. Yet a thread of truth runs throughout his story. The conflation of fact and fiction has confounded magic historians over the years resulting in many inaccuracies reported ranging from his name, to his place of birth, to his medical degree, to one of the most important events attributed to him. For the past decade I have been researching his life which it turns out is every bit as fascinating as his "swashbuckling' autobiography. This site is dedicated to uncovering and unravelling the life of one of Britain's top Victorian-era magicians.
